I thought popular music was rubbish when I was growing up. The pop stuff was naff and the rock stuff was generally
dire. But one night my Dad told me to stay up and watch a TV programme with Louis Armstrong on it. Louis and his band were all pretty grizzled, but the music they played was so relaxed and joyous, and they grinned at each other for the sheer pleasure of playing with each other. I looked at my Dad, and he was grinning too.
The smile of Tom McGuinness is wide and bright, and when it flashed tonight, it lit up the evening like a firework.
